Watch for water infiltration in a thawing period

When the snow melts, be vigilant. Take precautions to preserve roofs and avoid water infiltration.

Unfortunately, roof water infiltration is a very common problem in Quebec. Snow, rain, wind and ice damage roofs. Although our homes can withstand accumulations, be more cautious when a thaw occurs.

Snow melting results in water soaking into the interior walls and cause damage. There is a risk of infiltration if gutters are clogged, joints are in poor condition, asphalt shingles are damaged or there is snow and ice on the roof. The consequences of water infiltration can damage your material goods. Also, it can weaken the structure of the house and might cause mould.

Observe and prevent

To avoid major damage caused by water infiltration, adopt preventive measures. Perform three visual inspections of your attic space per year, in winter, spring and fall. Take the time to inspect everywhere on and under your roof.

If water has infiltrated through the roof, push your investigation further. If the insulation wool is wet and water leaked on the floor, sponge the water immediately. Also, place a container under the leak. Consider ventilating the house if your walls and ceilings have been damaged. If infiltration is important to you, don't waste time. Notify your insurer and check if your home insurance covers the damage. Your insurer should guide you on what to do from that point on.
