How to Best Choose Your Kitchen Countertop!

It is normal to want the kitchen to look its best as it is the room that contributes the most to a home’s resale value. A solution might be a brand new countertop! Are all the options out there making your head spin? Let RE/MAX be your guide.

Concrete: For a Modern Look

Little known, concrete countertops are growing in popularity with those who want to stand out with a modern decor. This raw material can be tinted to blend into any colour scheme. Homeowners usually choose grey or greyish beige, either in light or dark tones. One of its advantages is that it can be moulded into various shapes. Plus, it is heat resistant. However, be aware that this material stains easily; you must apply a protective sealant. Additionally, depending on its quality, concrete may crack over time.

Glass: The Green Choice

Primarily used in green builds (LEED construction), glass countertops are mostly manufactured using recycled glass and nontoxic concrete. They come in many colours and their look fits into all types of decor. But you should realize that they are expensive, especially if you wish to cover a wide surface area.

Laminate: Budget Friendly

Laminate countertops are the most frequently found option in homes and with good reason! Laminate is both inexpensive and eye-catching (even though it has a less luxurious appearance than other products). It comes in a plethora of colours and textures to match any decor, contemporary or rustic. However, it can be fragile: edges tend to become unstuck or chipped over time depending on its quality. Equally, you cannot place hot platters directly on it without consequence (it may be permanently damaged!).

Quartz: For Durability

This antibacterial and waterproof stone is ideal for countertops. It is shock and scratch resistant. You do not need to apply a sealant! Nevertheless, keep it away from heat. Its uniform finish and elegant style are sought after, but its cost may put some off.

Why not combine two types of material in your kitchen? For example, why not marry a marble counter with a solid wood extremity?

Stainless Steel: Be Surprised

More frequently found in restaurant kitchens, stainless steel countertops are nonetheless an interesting choice for homeowners. Their appearance will undoubtedly surprise guests and give your home a contemporary look. Stainless steel is also appreciated because it is hygienic (dirt does not stick to it!) and a recyclable material. Nonetheless, be aware that fingermarks are highly visible on its surface and that it is difficult to perfectly clean: wipe in the direction of the grain and don’t use abrasive materials.

Solid Wood: A Touch of Warmth

In a single stroke, a solid wood countertop (also called a butcher’s block) will give the room a cozy atmosphere. It is eye-catching in both a modern or rustic kitchen. It is a highly durable and recyclable material. Some woods, like teak, are waterproof. Keep in mind though that it is sensitive to shocks, scratches and heat. To use it as a cutting board, you will have to sand down the surface frequently to repair any damage.

Marble: Always in Style

A marble countertop adds a touch of sophistication to any kitchen. It is resistant to shocks and heat, and is a timeless look. It offers nothing but benefits, no? And yet, if it comes into contact with oil it must be quickly wiped clean to avoid staining. For this reason, you must regularly apply a sealant. Another inconvenience is its price: fairly steep for most budgets.

Slate: Give It Distinction

This stone is increasingly popular as a countertop. Slate is appreciated by homeowners who want to give their kitchen a luxurious look thanks to its unique colouring (green, violet, grey, blue and sometimes red). It is easy to clean, water resistant and can be sanded down to repair the signs of wear and tear.

Granite: Add Texture

Granite is heat, scratch and food spatter resistant, especially if it has been coated in a protective sealant. Moreover, it is one of the most durable countertop materials! Be advised, though, that this natural stone is not available in a uniform finish, making it look rather busy.
