11 Easy Ways to Freshen a Bathroom

11 Easy Ways to Freshen a Bathroom

Because it is the second most important room for buyers (after the kitchen) when they are house-hunting, the bathroom has to make a good impression. Here is how you can update it without blowing your budget.

Opt for a Quality Shower Curtain

Do you have a bath with a shower? The curtain has a genuine impact on the decor. If the wall colour is soft and classical, you can go for more vibrant fabric. If it’s the other way around, the curtain should blend in with the room by using a monochrome and textured fabric, for example. And don’t skimp on quality! Make it stylish!

Focus on the Backsplash

Are the wall tiles around the bath and sink unattractive, damaged or simply non-existent? A backsplash will bring the bathroom to life! This single improvement to the room can make all the difference. Some advice: to save money, only install it on a portion of the wall, not up to the ceiling. Finish with some paint, as needed.

Paint the Tile

You don’t feel like carrying out large scale renovations by removing the old tile even though it’s yellowed or way out of style? Why not paint the whole thing! There is an array of paints that adhere to smooth surfaces. But be warned: the effect will be less appealing on crackled tiles!

Transform the Vanity by Refacing It

If the vanity is outdated and is bringing the room down, it is important to revamp it. You can effortlessly transform it by using peel and stick refacing. Some businesses offer an installation service, but you can purchase this product and do the job yourself. There are many designs, textures and colours available.

Paint or Strip Wooden Components

Does your bathroom contain wooden components, either a cabinet, a decorative ladder or storage baskets? Giving them a coat of paint – to give them a rustic look, for example – could help them stand out. Conversely, stripping and staining this valued material to help the grain shine through might be an interesting solution.

Purge the Room

Visual clutter can make a room look tired. There was indeed a time – particularly in the early 2000s – when we combined various colours and items in our decor. Bathrooms stuck in this period would benefit from being cleaned out. Firstly, only place what is strictly necessary on the surfaces (sides of the bathtub, countertop, shelves, etc.). Then hide objects in storage baskets, out of sight. This one change can make the room feel lighter!

Change the Handles

On its own, this trick is not sufficient to completely refresh your bathroom, but it’s an excellent place to start. Replacing the cabinet, cupboard and door handles can significantly influence the feel of the room. There are many options to choose from in the stores!

Stain the Grout

Has the grout around the wall or floor tiles lost its original colour? Is it less than appealing despite all your scrubbing? You could remove it and replace it with fresh grout. If not, there are specially designed markers to stain grout. If you really want to be daring, choose a colour that contrasts with that of the tile!

Install a Stylish Faucet

Bathroom fittings can show their age, especially if they have not been regularly updated! You don’t have to rip out the vanity or bathtub, just replace the old faucet with a more modern and stylish one to give a new look.

Hide the Floor

If the floor tiles are no longer looking their best, try to hide the imperfections with a pretty bath mat. There are also self-adhesive tiles available in stores that can be installed over the existing flooring. It’s quick and renovation free.

Play With the Lighting

If you are embarrassed by the state of your bathroom and you are getting ready for a visit, you can give the room a welcoming atmosphere by turning off the lights and lighting candles or lamps that provide a gentle glow. This will conceal the imperfections all while creating a warm ambiance.
