Yes, You Can Use Ceramic Tile Both Inside and Outside at the Cottage!

We are all aware that ceramic tiles (also known as porcelain tiles) can be installed on the floor and walls of a residence. But did you know that it they also look great in an outdoor setting? Used in the cottage, this material offers several advantages.

How to Use Tile Inside the Cottage

From the floor to the ceiling, all the rooms in a secondary residence – kitchen, living room, bedroom, entrance, etc. – are suited to the use of tiles because they are water-resistant as well as easy to maintain (which is what we want at the cottage!). If your cottage is rather poorly insulated, a ceramic floor is the most logical option since vinyl might bubble or even crack as a result of freezing and thawing, and wood has a hard time weathering sporadic heating.

Inspiration for Use in the Backyard

When used outdoors, it is essential that the porcelain tiles be unglazed (to prevent falls) and have a small degree of water absorption. In this way, they will easily resist temperature fluctuations.

  • For the balcony or patio: The use of tiles on balconies in very trendy. To create the illusion that the cottage’s floor extends outside the building, lay the same tile in both areas. The space will magically look bigger!
  • Around the in-ground pool: Ceramic tiles can also be laid around the pool; however, make sure they aren’t slippery when wet.
  • Under the dining table: Eating al fresco in the backyard is always fun! All the more so when the flooring is pleasant underfoot and easy to clean.
  • In relaxation areas: A tiled floor is ideal in the sunroom, outdoor living room or gazebo, and gives the space a luxurious feel.

Style: What It Brings to the Cottage

People are generally more willing to experiment with the cottage’s decor, unlike in a main residence where a more timeless look is preferred. How lucky it is then that tiles come in all types, formats, colours and styles. They are therefore an easy way to give any room a unique feel. If you want to create a nature-inspired design, opt for ceramic tiles that imitate wood. To add a punch of colour to an area, dare to use pastels and bright hues. Is it lacklustre? Opt for patterned or herringbone-shaped models.

The trend is towards a more neutral atmosphere in the backyard with 24-inch square tiles and classic colours such as grey and sand. But who said you have to be a slave to fashion? For a refined look, both indoors and outdoors, porcelain imitations of concrete are just the thing.

Maintenance: All You Need Is Water!

No matter where the tile has been laid, you should not view its maintenance as a chore. A simple rag (or damp mop) and a dry cloth should be all you need to make it shine. Contrary to what is generally believed, soap is not required. Sometimes, the overuse of it can even cause the ceramic to become tarnished or damaged. For a deeper clean, add a little vinegar to your water.

Budget Friendly or No?

Another advantage of this type of material is that there is an option out there that will fit any budget. Be aware that most existing types of ceramic tiles can be used both indoors and outdoors. However, it is recommended that the tiles be at least two centimetres thick to better resist Mother Nature’s whims.

Ceramic tiles are a flooring option that evolves to follow fashions over time but that ultimately never goes out of style. Feel free to bring it into your decor!
